We often talk about inner work: raising our vibration, clearing our thoughts and emotions, and practicing mindfulness. Emotions are frequently used as key examples for our growth and transformation. However, facts alone sometimes are not enough to guide our decisions or prompt action.
Recently, I came across a compelling article based on scientific research that offers fresh insights into emotions. The study shows that emotions are not abstract concepts; they reside physically within our bodies and shape our experiences (Herman et al., 2022).
During the experiment, participants were asked to reflect on different life phenomena and report where they felt sensations in their bodies. The findings revealed something remarkable: each experience corresponded to a unique bodily map, displaying distinct patterns of sensation.
The research confirmed that emotions manifest as physical sensations throughout the body. These sensations can be subtle or intense. The body maps, illustrated with varying shades representing “temperature,” demonstrate how deeply emotions influence our internal state.
These physical effects appear as tension or relaxation, warmth or heaviness, acceleration or slowing down of bodily functions. Remarkably, our bodies respond even before our minds beging processing external events.
This is why cultivating body awareness enhances our ability to recognize these signals. Such awareness empowers us to choose how we engage with ourselves, others, and the world around us.
Take a moment now—tune in to your body. What is it telling you?
